Who We Are

Kumasi Injury is a research collaboration between Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi Ghana  and University of Washington (UW), Seattle USA. Its agenda is to strengthen injury control research in Ghana and West Africa. The program is solidly grounded on a history of collaboration in injury research, which started in 1995 and has received funding through Fogarty International Center (FIC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA since 2006.

The program has trained over 20 long-term and intermediate trainees, all of whom are currently working in Ghanaian institutions. This translates into more than 30 cumulative years of long-term training for investigators with an exceptionally high return/retention rate for trainees who have participated in the program. These trainees are critically placed to increase the capacity of their institutions to undertake injury research, across a spectrum of disciplines including: surgery, orthopedics, emergency medicine, nursing, social sciences, road safety, and public health.

Of equal importance, the program has conducted short-term (1 day – 1 week) training for over 400 participants. Individual Fogarty-related lectures at scientific meetings has been attended by more than 2000 participants. These training have increased the capacity of the institutions for which they work, built constituency for injury control nationwide, contributed meaningfully to the global scientific literature on injury prevention, and led to initiation of several significant injury control programs and initiatives.

Our Vision

To advance knowledge on injury control in order to limit morbidity and mortality in Ghana and the West Africa sub-region

Our Mission

To build capacity for research that provide the evidence for injury control in Ghana and the West Africa Sub-region

Our Goal
