Prof. Charles Newman Mock
Ph.D, FACS
Professor of Global Health and trauma surgeon with a PhD in Epidemiology. Prior to joining WHO, he was Director of the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA.
There he held an appointment as Professor in the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine with joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health.
He has degrees in medicine and public health and board certification in general surgery and trauma and surgical critical care. His main interests include the spectrum of injury control activities, especially as they pertain to developing countries. He has been engaged in this work along with a network of collaborators in Ghana, India, Mexico and Vietnam.
In March 2007, Dr Mock joined WHO's Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability (VIP) in Geneva, where he served as the Medical Officer in charge of developing WHO's activities on Emergency Trauma Care and on Burn Prevention and Treatment. He continues to serve as Chair of the Working Group for Essential Trauma Care of the International Society of Surgery, a collaboration of the Society and WHO which seeks to improve the care of injured patients. He also serves on the American College of Surgeon’s Committee on Trauma.
