Achievements

The Kumasi Injury Initiative has been highly successful. Successes chalked by the program include:

Conduct of high quality and highly relevant research by current and former trainees.
Maintenance of research and publications by trainees after completing their fellowship.
Retention of all long-term and intermediate trainees in Ghana and their continuous engagement in injury control work, due to the creation of productive research environments for them to return to, including ongoing mentorship and funding support for research work after completion of their training.
Increased institutional capacity to undertake injury research and injury control practice for several of the major institutions in Ghana, resulting in improvement in the policy for and practice of injury control in Ghana

The quality and relevance of research is reflected in the publications in peer reviewed journals that have been first authored by trainees and acknowledged FIC support. Leading journals in the field of injury within which trainees have published include Traffic Injury Prevention, Injury Control and Safety Promotion, Injury Prevention and World Journal of Surgery.
